Strengths

  • Find the best Fred Olsen insurance at AARDY

Weaknesses

  • Fred Olsen does not offer travel insurance to US residents

Fred Olsen Cruise Line is a traditional British-style line that accommodates hundreds rather than thousands of guests. Cruise fare includes access to pools, dining, entertainment, and shore excursions.

Unfortunately, Fred Olsen Cruises does not offer a travel insurance option to US-based guests.

This article discusses your Fred Olsen cruise insurance options and what to look for in a trip insurance policy.

What Are My Options for Travel Insurance?

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines might be “Britain’s friendliest fleet.” But, they aren’t friendly enough to offer cruise travel insurance for US residents.

Therefore, you need to buy travel insurance on your own. Although the cruise cost does not include travel insurance, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines requires that you have travel protection to board the ship.

AARDY Travel Insurance Marketplace lets you compare up to 30 policies from different carriers based on your specific needs.

Also, the travel insurance industry is highly regulated. The policy price must be the same, no matter where a traveler purchases a plan. Consequently, buying directly with the insurance company does not save you any money.

Fortunately, AARDY provides the lowest possible price. When you work with AARDY, you can access agents who liaison with the insurers on your behalf.

What Does Travel Insurance Cover?

In short, travel insurance protects you from financial loss.

Travel insurance provides peace of mind that you have safeguards if something does not go as planned before or during your trip.

To ensure adequate coverage, AARDY recommends an international traveler get a policy that includes a minimum of $100,000 Medical Insurance and $250,000 Emergency Medical Evacuation. Whenever possible, AARDY advises getting a Pre-existing Medical Condition Waiver, too.

Additionally, AARDY recommends comprehensive cancellation insurance. It bundles several protections in one policy, like trip costs, the traveler’s health, travel delays, and baggage/personal effects.

You can include the cruise fare, flights, excursions, hotels, rental cars, and any other prepaid, non-refundable travel arrangement in the trip cost.

When Should I Buy Travel Insurance?

Ideally, you want to get travel insurance shortly after your first trip deposit or payment. The policy protects your trip investment immediately.

Many travel insurance plans include benefits like:

  • Pre-Existing Medical Exclusion Waiver
  • Cancel For Any Reason
  • Cancel For Work Reasons

If you want these extra cancellation benefits, you must buy a plan within a few days of paying your first trip payment, usually within 10-21 days.

Add any subsequent, non-refundable payments to your policy to keep these extra benefits active. If you wait too long or forget to add to the trip cost, it can invalidate the additional services.

How Much Does Travel Insurance Cost?

The exact price of travel insurance depends on:

  • Trip cost
  • Traveler’s age
  • Destination
  • Length of the trip
  • Policy choice
  • Your state of residence

Older travelers are more susceptible to illness or injury and have a higher claim rate. Consequently, it costs more to insure them versus a younger traveler. For an accurate quote, use your current age. You will overpay if you provide your age at the time of your trip.

Additionally, keep in mind that a travel policy only insures the trip costs that are prepaid and non-refundable.

Furthermore, not all travel arrangements are insurable. For example, if you redeemed miles or points for your flight, your policy will not cover the airfare value.

Since airfare purchased with miles does not hold a monetary value, travel insurance cannot insure it as part of the trip cost. However, a travel policy insures non-refundable taxes, fees, and penalties to redeposit miles.

How Much Travel Insurance Coverage Do I Need?

For overseas travel, AARDY recommends a travel policy that includes a minimum of:

  • $100,000 Medical Insurance
  • $250,000 Emergency Medical Evacuation
  • Waiver of Pre-existing Medical Conditions

If you visit remote locations such as Africa, Asia, or Australia, AARDY recommends a policy with a minimum of:

  • $100,000 Medical Insurance
  • $500,000 Emergency Medical Evacuation
  • Waiver of Pre-existing Medical Conditions

Fred Olsen Cruises International Medical Benefits

Often, travelers tell us they are concerned about medical protection during their trip. All plans at AARDY include Medical Insurance and Medical Evacuation.

Medical Insurance pays for a traveler’s medical treatment while away from home.

Medical Evacuation pays for the transportation cost of moving a sick or injured traveler to the closest medical facility in an emergency. Once the traveler is stable, they may need further treatment at home. Medical Evacuation also pays to return the traveler to a hospital near their home.

AARDY recommends that you choose a travel plan which includes at least $100,000 Medical Insurance and $250,000 Medical Evacuation if you plan to travel internationally.

Fred Olsen Medical Insurance Coverage

Traveling without adequate Medical Insurance puts you at risk of costly medical bills. No one wants to spend their hard-earned retirement savings on medical treatments in a foreign country.

The logic behind the $100,000 Medical Insurance and $250,000 Medical Evacuation recommendation is simple. These levels ensure you are adequately covered if you experience a catastrophic medical emergency while you travel. Also, you avoid costly out-of-pocket expenses for a medical emergency during your Fred Olsen cruise.

Travel insurance policies only pay up to the maximum amount of coverage selected, no matter the circumstance. Therefore, your travel plan should provide enough coverage.

Typically, universal healthcare in other countries does not cover travelers who are not citizens of that country. Often, Americans pay full price at private hospitals. Furthermore, if you need hospitalization, inpatient services usually cost $3,000-$4,000 per night.

While some health insurance plans provide international coverage, you should not count on it. Most health insurance plans, Medicare included, do not cover you if you are in another country.

Emergency Medical Evacuation

Important to note, US-based health insurance rarely provides Medical Evacuation. Medicare will not pay to repatriate you to the US if you have a health emergency overseas.

A private jet air ambulance outfitted as a flying hospital can cost up to $25,000 per flight hour. Medical Evacuation charges quickly add up when traveling home from another country.

Therefore, AARDY strongly suggests you purchase a travel plan with the minimum recommended coverage limits for your Fred Olsen cruise.

Pre-existing Medical Conditions

Most travelers, particularly seniors, need travel insurance that covers Pre-Existing Medical Conditions.

Typically, travel insurance policies exclude Pre-existing Conditions. However, if you buy the policy early, within 2 to 3 weeks of paying your initial deposit, many plans offer a Waiver to close that gap.

AARDY recommends that travelers buy a Waiver of Pre-existing Medical Conditions whenever possible. It guarantees to close coverage gaps in Trip Cancellation, Interruption, and Medical treatment.

Otherwise, most travel insurance policies exclude Pre-existing Conditions that are new or worsened in the 60-180 days immediately before buying travel insurance. However, conditions older than 60-180 days that are unchanged and stable are covered.

Most travel insurance plans have a few requirements to activate the Pre-Existing Condition Exclusion Waiver. Usually, they mandate that you:

  • Purchase the policy within 10-21 days of your initial deposit or payment date
  • Insure 100% of your prepaid, non-refundable trip costs subject to cancellation penalties/ restrictions
  • Insure additional travel arrangements (made after the policy purchase) within 10-21 days of the subsequent payment
  • Be medically fit to travel at the time of purchase.

Fred Olsen Cruises Trip Cancellation

Trip Cancellation protects your trip cost investment if you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason.

Every policy certificate lists the reasons it covered cancellation. Coverage varies from plan to plan, so please ask an AARDY agent for assistance if you have a specific concern.

Almost every policy covers:

  • Unforeseen illness, accidental injury, or death
  • Inclement weather
  • Traffic accident en route to the destination
  • Hijacking, quarantine, jury duty, subpoena
  • Fire, flood, burglary, or natural disaster
  • Involuntary layoff
  • Theft of passports or visas
  • Mandatory Evacuation due to adverse weather or natural disasters
  • Military leave revoked or called to military service due to natural disaster
  • Terrorism
  • Common carrier strike
  • Bankruptcy or default of a travel supplier (airline, cruise line, tour operator, etc.)

Also, Travel Insured Worldwide Trip Protector and Travel Insured Worldwide Trip Protector Plus cover 100% Trip Cancellation due to:

  • Workplace natural disaster
  • Job relocation
  • Your host at destination’s life-threatening injury or death
  • Required to work during the trip
  • Mandatory Evacuation at your destination
  • Felonious assault
  • Employer merger or acquisition
  • A NOAA hurricane warning within 48 hours of your departure
  • School year extended
  • Cancellation of travel arrangements resulting in travel delay and 50% loss of trip
  • Normal pregnancy or a family member’s childbirth (pregnancy must occur after the policy effective date)

fred-olsen-cruises-aardy-greece-coastal-village

Fred Olsen Cruises Trip Interruption

Like Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption also covers your trip cost. However, Trip Interruption protects the unused portion if you must curtail the trip for a covered reason.

Most policies at AARDY reimburse up to 150% for covered Trip Interruptions. The extra 50% helps pay for the additional transportation cost to get back home early. Or it can help with the expense of catching up to a trip after a covered travel delay.

Typically, a travel insurance policy’s Trip Cancellation reasons are identical to its Trip Interruption reasons.

Fred Olsen Cruises Cancel for Any Reason

Fred Olsen has a steep cancellation penalty.

Even if you cancel the day after booking, they will charge you a 15% cancellation fee. Since it’s clear Fred Olsen Cruises does not offer Cancel For Any Reason, even in the form of future credit, you should look for it elsewhere.

The highest level of coverage, Cancel for Any Reason, lets you cancel the trip for any reason and receive a 75% cash refund of the total trip cost. Typically, Cancel for Any Reason policies cost 40%-50% more than their standard counterparts.

How do you know if a Cancel For Any Reason plan is right for your Fred Olsen cruise?

Let’s say you are concerned about a severe medical condition or the death of an elderly parent. Fortunately, most standard travel insurance plans already cover this if their condition worsens and causes you to cancel your trip.

However, suppose you worry that your destination country may issue a travel ban on Americans. Or maybe you don’t want to be hassled with a mandatory quarantine upon arriving at the destination.

Either way, you never know what might prevent you from travel. Cancel For Any Reason is the only way to guarantee you can cancel for a reason not already named in the policy and receive a partial refund.

Worth noting, Cancel for Any Reason policies have a few rules:

  • Buy the policy within 10-21 days of the initial deposit
  • Add subsequent travel costs within 10-21 days of each payment
  • Insure 100% of all prepaid and non-refundable trip costs
  • Cancel 2 days or more before the departure date
  • Be fit to travel at the time of policy purchase

That last point is essential. Suppose that you hope you are well enough to travel in the future but are not fit to travel today. In that case, you are disqualified from buying Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance.

Additionally, Cancel for Any Reason always pays a portion of the trip costs, never 100%. The only way to receive a 100% refund is under a covered cancellation reason.

AARDY Has Many Options to Insure a Fred Olsen Cruise

In review, Fred Olsen Cruise Line does not sell travel insurance to US residents, so you need to purchase trip insurance elsewhere.

AARDY allows travelers to compare travel insurance options from different companies at once. You can use an AARDY travel insurance policy with any cruise line, airline, tour group, or travel agent.

The best travel insurance is the policy that best meets your needs. In some cases, a standard plan will do the trick. In others, only Cancel For Any Reason benefits bring you the peace of mind you desire.

Regardless, check all your options first. Consider a policy that includes at least $100,000 Medical Insurance and $250,000 Emergency Medical Evacuation for an international trip.

AARDY Guarantees the Lowest Price

AARDY guarantees you won’t find a better price anywhere else. Travel insurance is highly regulated, so not even the insurance company can sell the same policy for less.

Whatever the case, visit AARDY first to shop around before you commit to a travel policy.
