What is IMG Global Travel Insurance’s CrewSelect International Medical Insurance?

CrewSelect International Medical Insurance is travel protection for long-term mariners. Boat crew members that spend more than a year at sea in international waters are the primary target for this type of cover. IMG CrewSelect International can cover both individual mariners and entire crews.

The plan comes in two tiers of benefits – Standard and Elite. As mariners spend large amounts of time outside their home country, maximum payments are expressed in EUR, GBP, and USD. Differences in cover between Standard and Elite are primarily in maximum lifetime payments. These payments are £1.5m/$2.5m/€1.75m for Standard and £5m/$8m/€6m for Elite. Cover for specific out-patient treatments also have higher maximums under the Elite plan.

Both Standard and Elite feature cover for pre-existing conditions, emergency dental treatment, and trip interruption. Lost luggage or theft of personal property and papers is also included. Meanwhile, Elite offers more complete cover for pregnancy, non-emergency dental work, and a vision contribution dependent on coinsurance.

Optional add-on benefits include a Global Personal Accident Plan that protects against permanent total disabilities. A Global Daily Indemnity – Hospital Income Plan also protects against lost wages in the event of an extended hospital stay. Amateur sailboat racing cover and a special crew return benefit are included. Also, recreational underwater activities cover is standard for both versions of this policy.

IMG Global Travel Insurance’s CrewSelect International Medical Insurance: The Missing Pieces

There’s not much missing when it comes to IMG Global’s CrewSelect International Medical Insurance plan. Especially on the Elite level. The Standard level does leave some things out, so taking out Elite cover is recommended for the best cover.

Where we do have concern is with regard to the cover for Pre-Existing Medical Conditions. Here is the policy language:

For Individuals: Conditions that are fully disclosed on the application and have not been excluded or restricted by a Personal Medical Exclusion Policy Endorsement, will be covered after coverage has been in effect for 24 continuous months (subject to the foregoing limits and the other terms of the plan).

For Groups: Pre-existing conditions that are not excluded or restricted by a Personal Medical Exclusion Policy Endorsement, will be covered after six (6) months of continuous coverage, if treatment free, or twelve (12) months of continuous coverage, regardless of treatment.

This could potentially be quite limiting, so please understand the restrictions associated with the policy prior to purchase.

IMG CrewSelect International Medical Insurance – Eligibility

CrewSelect International is available to individuals and groups of professional marine crew members of all nationalities. To be eligible for cover you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must currently or usually work aboard or be employed by a vessel as a full-time, sea-going crew-member for hire, who expects to spend a significant period of time during the period of insurance sailing outside of US territorial waters in such capacity.
  • You must be less than 75 years of age.
  • If you are not a US citizen, you must provide a non-US residence address or provide a signed Statement of Residence.
  • If you are a US citizen, you must not qualify for or be able to obtain adequate coverage under a US domestic insurance plan that will provide continuous coverage outside of the USA, and you must provide a signed Statement of Residence and an address of residence outside of the USA, if available.

Overall Rating for IMG Global Travel Insurance’s CrewSelect International Medical Insurance

IMG CrewSelect International Medical Insurance is a fairly comprehensive plan. While Standard does have some gaps in its cover, Elite leaves no stone unturned in providing access to care. However, you will need to investigate individual and group quotes to compare premium prices.

Note the age limitation of 74 and also the quite stringent Pre-Existing Medical Condition restrictions.

I Panicked When I Discovered I panicked when I discovered the Travel Insurance I had through Expedia had expired when I changed my flight reservation. When I went to renew I was told I couldn't. I discovered AARDY on my AARP site and I was excited I could purchase an even better travel plan with cover starting with my trip departure, at a cost I could afford. I was confused with the initial site and Mr. Breeze reached out to me for clarification. He explained the policy more thoroughly and addressed all my concerns, can't get any better than that! Thank You AARDY and thank you Jonathan for your assistance. I can go on my trip now knowing I'll be covered for medical emergencies, and then some. _ _Barbara

Good Choices, Well Explained I liked the way insurance was explained. I had read an article your company had written explaining Expedia trip cover versus other choices. I used this advice to make the best choice for me and my traveling companions. That choice was to take a policy that provided much better medical and evacuation primary care. Your site allowed comparisons, and I think I got the best value for my money. I don't like constant follow up emails, though. You could back off a bit!! Louise
