  • Insufficient Travel Insurance Cover

Is United Airlines Travel Insurance Worth Buying? Probably not, for most people. There are much better low-cost travel insurance options available with more cover.

United Airlines has steadily grown to become one of the world’s most dominant air carriers. Whenever you use the United site, there is a huge push to buy United Airlines Travel Insurance. But is its travel insurance worth buying?

United Airlines Travel Insurance | AARDY.com

Please enjoy our comprehensive United Airlines Travel Insurance Review.

  • United’s Flight Insurance is provided by AIG, a highly reputable travel insurer.
  • United's Travel Insurance is incredibly expensive – twice the price of other policies.

When we compare United's Travel Insurance against low-cost trip insurance policies, United’s cover is weak. United Airlines Trip Insurance is both expensive, and has very limited cover.

We cannot recommend that you buy United Airlines Travel Insurance.

There are so many better options with more cover at a lower price.

United Airlines Travel Insurance – Powered by AIG

United Airlines Travel Insurance is actually provided by AIG. Now, we are big fans of AIG as a Travel Insurance carrier. Its specialist unit is called AIG Travel Guard, and it is a highly reputable trip insurance specialist. We offer a number of its travel insurance plans.

United Airlines Travel Insurance – Actually an Air Ticket Plan

Alarm bells should start ringing if you read the policy document that is presented for United Airlines Trip Insurance.

United Airlines Travel Insurance - Domestic Air Ticket Plan | AARDY.com

So, this is really a cheap United Airlines Travel Insurance. Cheap, as in there is little value here. Later we will show you how expensive the policy is.

Until then, let’s see what is missing.

United offers no travel medical insurance. No health benefits at all.

We can see no medical evacuation coverage from United.

There is no support if an employer cancels a vacation.

Should you get United Airlines Travel Insurance? We cannot see any strength in this policy. There is insufficient cover for us to be able to recommend it.

Detailed Analysis of United Airlines Trip Insurance

We will use a recent example of a flight that we were reviewing.

United from San Francisco to New York in May. Our return flight cost was $845.

United Airlines Travel Insurance - $845 SFO - NYC | AARDY.com

At check-out, United gives us the option to buy its flight insurance. This is quite normal now – almost every airline in the USA does this. Whenever we look at airline flight insurance we tend to get similar results.

Super-expensive insurance rates, with really weak cover. Our assumption is that the airlines have managed to negotiate very high commission policies from insurers. This does not seem to be to the benefit of the passenger, which is a shame.

Here is what United present us with at check-out.

A strong Travel Insurance would have significant policy benefits. Yet, here is the cover that United Trip Insurance provides:

United Airlines Travel Insurance - Domestic Air Ticket Plan | AARDY.com

United Airlines Domestic Air Ticket Plan

  • Maximum Limit Per Person Trip Cancellation -Trip Cost up to a maximum of $100,000
  • Trip Interruption - up to 125% of Trip Cost up to a maximum of $125,000
  • Trip Delay - (Maximum of $100 per day) to a maximum of $500
  • Missed Connection - $500
  • Baggage & Personal Effects - $500
  • Baggage Delay - (Maximum of $100 per day) $300
  • Accidental Death & Dismemberment - $27,500

What is Missing from United Airlines Travel Insurance?

Travel Health Insurance

If you are traveling domestically, Travel Health Insurance may be the most important piece of cover that a trip insurance could provide. Most of us have health insurance at home, but our personal health insurance often does not support us as we travel. As soon as we move out of state, or out of network, our out-of-pocket costs can skyrocket. Every single travel insurance that we offer through AARDY includes travel health insurance cover. It is just assumed that this health insurance cover will be part of a travel policy. We cannot recommend that you get United Airlines Travel Insurance, as health cover is not offered by United.

Travel Evacuation Insurance

Should you fall terribly ill, or get seriously injured, the nearest suitable medical facility may be an expensive ride away. Travel Insurance should cover these costs. If you buy United Airlines Travel Insurance you will have no such cover. This is a critical omission, in our opinion.

Strong Travel Redundancy Protection

The best United Airlines Travel Insurance that you could find would help you if you were made redundant. United’s policy does provide a little cover, but it is not strong. United will help if you need to cancel your trip because of redundancy. But, United needs you to have worked for the same employer for at least three years of continuous employment. That’s a high hurdle for many travelers. The best trip insurance policies only require one year of continuous employment for travel redundancy protection to kick in.

Vacation Cancellation Insurance

Most of us work for employers who approve our vacation. Once vacation is approved, we book our flights and look forward to the holiday. Unfortunately, sometimes that approved vacation gets cancelled. Wouldn’t it be great if your trip insurance could help out? The best travel insurance does exactly that. Should you buy United Airlines Travel Insurance you will have no vacation cancellation insurance.

The best United Airlines Travel Insurance that you could buy would incorporate these benefits. Such policy benefits are standard in almost all trip insurance policies that we come across. Their omission in United’s policy is concerning.

Alternatives to United Airlines Travel Insurance

AARDY is a travel insurance marketplace. We compare trip insurance policies from the leading travel insurance carriers in the USA. Our carriers are some of the most experienced in the world. They are licensed in all 50 US states and D.C. Each of them offers multiple policy options. They are rated at no less than an ‘A’ grade by A.M. Best.

What does that mean for you as a traveler? It means that instead of being offered a single option by United, you get a dozen. Your contact information is not shared with the insurance carriers – your quote is anonymous. You will receive binding insurance quotes with the best possible insurance rates.

Here are some of the options that we were presented with when we ran the same details through our insurance marketplace.

United Airlines Travel Insurance - AARDY Options | AARDY.com

For this particular flight, we returned 15 different trip insurance plans for our customer. Anyone looking for the cheapest travel insurance will see a price of $27. Remember that the cheap United Airlines Travel Insurance was priced at $51. United just doesn’t offer great value.

On this flight our preferred option would the iTI Lite** Travel Insurance**. Compared against the poor cover offered by United, the iTI policy stands out for its low cost and high benefits.

There are no circumstances that we can think of where we would recommend United Airlines Travel Insurance.

United Airlines – Airline Ticket Hack

Every airline in the USA loves to sell Refundable tickets. Why wouldn’t they? We see Refundable tickets prices as high as 10x the cost of a Non-Refundable ticket. The profit margins on a Refundable ticket must be incredible.

Yet, if you stop to think, all a customer really wants from a refundable ticket is to get some or most of their money back if they need to cancel the flight. Well, when we look at that type of problem, we don’t want an over-inflated price for a flight. We try to find an inexpensive flight insurance to remove the financial risk of cancelling a Non-Refundable ticket.

Here’s how a clever use of flight insurance can change a Non-Refundable flight into one with Refundable benefits. We call this the Airline Ticket Hack.

Here is the SFO to NYC flight that we were looking at with United.

United Airlines Travel Insurance - First is Cheaper than Economy | AARDY.com On the 7 am flight we see these prices:

  • Basic Economy - $144
  • Economy - $169
  • Flexible Economy - $837
  • Basic First - $559

Note that the same economy seat has a variation in price of 400% between the least expensive to the most expensive fare. It’s the same seat! You will be getting the same food, same movie, and the same pitiful leg-room. Yet there is a 400% difference in price. All you get for that extra money is a little booking flexibility.

That’s madness. Yet we know that every day passengers routinely book Refundable seats without checking their options.

In fact, on this trip, it is cheaper to fly in Basic First Class, than it is to fly the Refundable Economy seat.

Airline Ticket Hack – Refundable

We understand that you may need to have the flexibility to cancel your trip. Most cancellations will be covered at 100% assuming that you have Cancel for Work travel insurance embedded into your trip insurance plan. Remember that the iTI Lite had this in place for work cancellations of vacation.

But this may not be enough for some travelers. For them, we recommend taking Cancel for Any Reason Travel Insurance. You can now cancel your trip with no reason whatsoever, and still get a 75% refund on your travel costs.

This is one of the most innovative trip insurance cover options that we have seen. There are almost no circumstances where there is better value in paying for an airline Refundable ticket compared with the trip insurance.

On our particular flight we see these Cancel for Any Reason options.

United Airlines Travel Insurance - Cancel for Any Reason | AARDY.com

We have the choice of both the iTI Travel LX and TII’s Worldwide Trip Protector Plus policies. Both offer Cancel for Any Reason protection, plus a slew of other coverage benefits. Travel Insured International’s Worldwide Trip Protector Plus is charged at $75. iTI’s Travel LX is priced at $81. Both are world-class policies.

Consider that the Worldwide Trip Protector Plus is only $24 more than United’s $51 policy.

When we compare both policies:

Travel Insured International – Worldwide Trip Protector Plus** - $75**

AARDY – Compare and Save

AARDY is a travel insurance marketplace. We get binding insurance quotes, anonymously, from all of our major travel insurance carriers. We provide simple comparison for travel insurance.

Does AARDY Charge More?

In the USA, insurance is regulated with anti-discrimination protection in place.

As such, an identical policy from the same insurance carrier may not be sold with a lower price. We offer a fuller explanation here: Travel Insurance Comparison

What does this mean to a consumer? The price we charge for your trip insurance is identical to the price that you would get if you went directly to the travel insurer. We do not mark up prices. We do not charge a cent more. What we do is compare the market for you, so that you do not have to jump from insurer to insurer. You see the best rates for each trip insurance policy. We just need one minute of your time. AARDY is the leading travel insurance marketplace in the USA.

When you are offered the opportunity to buy United Airlines Travel Insurance, take a moment to compare.

Safe travels.
