Vantage Travel Insurance

Vantage Travel Insurance
Insurance Partner
Coverage Options

  • Adequate Medical Insurance and Medical Evacuation
  • Pre-existing Condition Waiver
  • Cancel For Any Reason

  • Only 1 travel Insurance policy option
  • High cost
  • Excludes bankruptcy of travel supplier and travel agency (Vantage)
  • Cancel For Any Reason is future credit that expires

Vantage World Deluxe Travel supplies tours, river, ocean, and expedition cruises all over the world. They own some of the ships and charter others.

Vantage Travel offers only one take-it or leave-it insurance option. The plan has adequate Medical Insurance and Evacuation for international travel. Also, it includes Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption, but only at a 100% refund. However, most similar policies offer a 150% Interruption benefit.

Next, the plan includes a Cancel For Any Reason waiver. The waiver provides future credit if you cancel for the reason that’s not named in the policy.

Unfortunately, Vantage trip insurance leaves a lot to be desired since it has several critical coverage gaps. Finally, it comes with a very high price tag compared to similar plans available on the marketplace.

TripMate administers the plan, and United States Fire Insurance Company underwrites it. Travelers can buy Vantage Travel insurance at checkout on the website.

In this review, we discuss Vantage travel insurance in detail and discuss what to look for in a trip insurance program. Then we provide alternatives to Vantage Travel cruise insurance.

Our Sample Cruise: Gems of the Seine, Paris, and Normandy

Our 11-day sample trip costs $11,000 for two people, ages 55 and 60.

Vantage Travel insurance charges $1,298 to cover both seniors. That price is astoundingly high. Once the trip cost reaches $12,000 per person, Vantage travel insurance charges 10.6% of the trip cost.

Comparison Quotes

Now that we know how much Vantage travel insurance costs, we look at travel insurance available on the broader marketplace.

AARDY always recommends travelers leaving the US take at least $100,000 Medical Insurance, $250,000 Medical Evacuation, and a Pre-existing Condition Waiver whenever possible.

The least expensive comprehensive program that meets our recommended coverage is Trawick First Class. It costs $596.75 for both travelers—that is less than half the cost of Vantage travel insurance. It includes robust Medical Insurance and Evacuation, as well as 150% reimbursement for Trip Interruption.

Similarly, the least expensive plan with Cancel For Any Reason is Seven Corners RoundTrip Choice CFAR 75% for $940.80. It includes similar benefits as Trawick First Class but adds a 75% reimbursement if you cancel for any reason not named in the policy.

Vantage Travel Insurance Price and Value

We’d all like to believe that “the more you pay, the more you get.” Unfortunately, that is not the case with Vantage travel insurance.

Overall, Vantage travel insurance is a comprehensive plan with adequate Medical Insurance and Medical Evacuation. We also like that it covers Pre-existing Conditions. It meets our minimum recommendations for traveling outside the US.

Four points detract from the plan’s effectiveness.

First, it’s costly. It costs nearly 40% more than Seven Corners, which offers a cash refund for Cancel For Any Reason.

Second, it lacks protection against bankruptcy. Bankruptcy protection is standard coverage on travel insurance, but Vantage World Deluxe Travel Insurance does not cover default.

Third, Cancel For Any Reason only provides future credit. This would limit your options if you needed a cash refund.

Finally, it only offers 100% Trip Interruption protection, not 150%. You might have to pay for your own transportation home.

Vantage Travel Protects Trip Cancellation

Trip Cancellation lets you cancel your trip before your departure date and receive a full refund of trip costs.

Sometimes, life gets in the way of your travel plans. Suppose a non-traveling family member falls ill. Or a car accident sends you to physical therapy for the following 3 months. Walking through the heart of Germany would be a nightmare on crutches!

Having the luxury to cancel your trip due to an unforeseen covered event is one of the main reasons people seek travel insurance.

Here are the only circumstances Vantage travel insurance covers for a 100% trip cost refund:

  • Accident, illness, or death of a traveler or family member
  • Quarantine, jury duty, or subpoena
  • Home or destination uninhabitable or inaccessible due to natural disaster
  • Place of employment destroyed by natural disaster and must work
  • Documented theft of passport or visa
  • Job transfer
  • Traffic accident en route to departure
  • Delay 12 hours or longer of common carrier strike, mechanical breakdown, or weather
  • Shutdown of airport or air traffic control
  • Traveler called to emergency military duty after a natural disaster
  • Military leave revoked
  • Employment terminated

Most mid-level to high-level travel insurance policies cover all of the above scenarios and more. Always check the policy certificate for details.

Trawick First Class and Seven Corners RoundTrip Choice (CFAR 75%) also cover these situations at a 100% refund. But they also cover a few more cases:

  • Victim of felonious assault
  • Terrorism
  • Inclement weather
  • Bankruptcy of default of your travel supplier
  • Death of hospitalization of host at destination (75% on Seven Corners RoundTrip Choice CFAR 75%)

Vantage Travel Cancel For Any Reason Waiver

Vantage Travel insurance includes a Cancel For Any Reason Waiver. However, it does not function like most travel insurance plans.

Typical CFAR plans reimburse you in cash for up to 75% of your total trip cost if you cancel for a reason not otherwise covered by the policy.

Vantage Travel insurance only gives you limited future credit. Consider the fact that Vantage trip insurance does not cover bankruptcy for a full refund. If they go into default, future credit is worthless. Consequently, you’d lose all the money you spent on the trip, plus the cost of the insurance.

Vantage travel Cancel For Any Reason has a few limitations:

  • Only includes travel arrangements Vantage Travel sets up
  • Voucher expires 12 months after issue
  • Voucher cannot be used for deposits or to buy travel insurance

Future credit is better than losing your money entirely, but cash is always more useful.

On the other hand, all CFAR plans available through AARDY send you a 50-75% cash refund if you exercise the CFAR benefit.

Seven Corners RoundTrip Choice CFAR 75% was the least expensive CFAR option for this trip. It refunds 75% of your money as cash, even if you simply do not want to take the trip. You must:

  • Buy the plan within 20 days of your Initial Deposit Date
  • Cover 100% of all prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses
  • Be fit to travel when buying travel insurance
  • Cancel 48 hours or more before your scheduled departure date

Vantage Travel Trip Interruption Reimburses Early Departure

Life’s troubles do not stop on vacation. Suppose an unforeseen, covered event forces you to return from the trip prematurely. In that case, Trip Interruption reimburses you for the lost trip costs and travel expenses.

What if you develop a fever or break a bone during the trip? Or, a family member back home suddenly becomes gravely ill, and you need to return to be with them?

Trip Interruption compensates you for the days lost due to the covered Interruption. Without Trip Interruption protection, you would lose the unused prepaid, non-refundable trip costs if you left early.

Typically, the insurance company underwrites the Trip Cancellation and Interruption. In this case, Vantage Travel backs the Trip Cancellation, but the insurer pays Trip Interruption benefits up to 100% of the trip cost.

Most Trip Interruption policies reimburse up to 150% of trip costs, but Vantage insurance does not. It covers up to 100% of the trip cost, including the expense of returning home early. The extra 50% benefit in other policies helps cover those additional travel costs.

Vantage Trip Interruption uses the same reasons for Trip Cancellation and Interruption. This is also true of Trawick First Class and Seven Corners RoundTrip Choice.

Trip Interruption insurance gives you peace of mind whether you travel to Europe or anywhere in the world.

What If Vantage Travel Goes Bankrupt?

Important to note that Vantage Travel insurance names Bankruptcy or Financial Default as an exclusion.

Consequently, if Vantage Travel went bankrupt after buying their insurance, you’d be out the trip cost and the insurance premium. Even if they offered future credit, what good is future credit with a bankrupt travel company?

The policy leaves you unprotected against:

  • Bankruptcy or default of an airline, cruise line, tour operator, or other travel providers
  • Bankruptcy or default of a travel agency
  • Failure to supply services by the airline, cruise line, tour operator, or other travel providers

Bankruptcy protection is essential. All policies at AARDY include travel supplier bankruptcy. However, travel insurance does not cover travel agency default or failure to provide services unless you have a Cancel For Any Reason policy.

Vantage Travel Medical Insurance Pays for Treatment

Travel medical insurance lets someone else pays your hospital bills. It protects you against the financial burden of an unforeseen accident or illness. Without adequate travel medical insurance, the consequences can be catastrophic.

Suppose you are walking the beach at Normandy. You feel light-headed, and the next thing you know, you are waking up in a hospital. The doctor tells you that you had a stroke and are not ready to go home. The treatment and testing for a stroke totals $85,000. Your trip cost a fraction of that amount, and you cannot fathom how to pay such a bill.

Overseas, Americans go to private hospitals for treatment, even in countries with universal health care. Since Americans do not pay into that system, they pay full price at private facilities. Hospitalizations can cost $3,000 to $4,000 per day. Major medical insurance has little or no coverage abroad.

Medicare recipients are out of luck, too. Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplements lack adequate safeguards for traveling outside of the country. Some Medicare Supplements offer up to $50,000 of emergency coverage abroad. However, you must be in critical condition, pay a deductible and the 20% coinsurance. Also, the coverage limit on a Medigap policy is far below our recommended coverage limits.

The US State Department cannot help you financially. Their role is political and legal, and they advise US travelers to take medical insurance when leaving the country.

Therefore, AARDY recommends each traveler, especially seniors, buy at least $100,000 Medical Insurance for overseas travels.

We are pleased that Vantage Travel insurance provides $100,000 Medical Insurance. Likewise, Trawick First Class includes $150,000, and Seven Corners RoundTrip Choice has $100,000.

Vantage Travel Includes Emergency Medical Evacuation

If you had a stroke in Europe, how do you get home?

If you are well enough, you can take a commercial flight. However, if you are stable but cannot take a commercial flight, you might need a medical jet to return you home.

Private jets outfitted as flying hospitals transfer you home under the supervision of doctors and nurses. This emergency Medical transportation can cost $15,000 to $25,000 per hour. Coming back from France, it can become costly rapidly.

AARDY consistently recommends buying $250,000 Medical Evacuation insurance, at minimum, when traveling overseas. This amount makes sure you don’t face a massive medical transportation bill.

Again, Medicare does not cover Medical Evacuation that brings you back to the US for treatment.

Happily, Vantage Travel insurance provides $500,000 for Medical Evacuation. This amount is more than enough for a trip to Europe. It is also appropriate for travel to remote areas like polar regions or Africa.

Trawick First Class has $1 million, and Seven Corners RoundTrip Choice includes $500,000 evacuation protection.

Vantage Travel Covers Pre-existing Medical Conditions

If you have Pre-existing Medical Conditions, do not worry. Vantage trip insurance (like Trawick First Class and Seven Corners RoundTrip Choice) offers a Waiver of Pre-existing Conditions.

When you buy the policy early, within 14 days of paying your Initial Trip Deposit or Payment, the Vantage plan covers all Pre-existing Medical Conditions. This provision applies to Trip Cancellation, Interruption, and Medical Insurance.

Suppose you have a back problem. You first experienced this injury several months ago and are fit to travel. However, you saw the orthopedic doctor 6 weeks ago, and she changed your medications. Because you received treatment for the condition within the past 60 days, travel insurance would exclude Pre-existing Condition coverage.

However, when you buy the policy early, the Pre-existing Condition Waiver closes that coverage gap. The plan then protects you if an unexpected surgery before the departure date prevents travel. The policy covers injury and illness, so you would receive a full cash refund.

Typically, when you buy a travel insurance plan within 14-21 days of the Initial Trip Deposit, you receive a Pre-existing Condition Waiver. Again, Vantage travel requires purchase within 14 days. Trawick First Class also has a 14-day window. However, Seven Corners RoundTrip Choice is more flexible with a 20-day window.

Vantage Travel Insurance Isn’t Bad, Just Expensive

Overall, Vantage Travel insurance is an acceptable plan. The Medical Insurance and Medical Evacuation amounts meet or exceed our minimum recommendations. It also includes a Waiver for Pre-existing Medical Conditions.

However, the red flag problems with Vantage Travel include no bankruptcy protection, high cost, a weak Cancel For Any Reason waiver. Vantage travel insurance provides one plan choice, and it offers no optional add-ons to customize coverage.
